Ohio TESOL is deeply saddened by the horrific school shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. We are language teachers who work in words. We labor everyday to help our students find words to express themselves. We now find ourselves at a loss. There are no words present in any language that could ever capture the grief we feel over the slaughter of children and their teachers while they were at school. No syllables can be parsed together to convey how much we want this to end.
In some cultures grief, empathy, and solidarity are not spoken out loud. Instead one sits in silence with a friend and mourns alongside them. To the victims and their families, to our fellow teachers in Texas, and to all of our students we sit beside you in grief. And we resolve to stand with you in change.
Click here to donate to support and empower survivors of violence. We call on Ohio’s legislators to work towards policy changes that will end gun violence in schools.
Sincerely,
The Ohio TESOL Board
