Position Summary

The English Second Language Teacher’s responsibilities include planning and presenting lessons to facilitate students’ understanding and application of standards and concepts.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Development of schedules, lesson plans, and selection of learning material and resources that help achieve curriculum objectives
  • Analyzing the needs, interests, strengths, and weaknesses of students, and developing lesson plans in accordingly
  • Monitoring progress and discipline and keeping parents and school counselors informed of learners who need additional support
  • Establishing and enforcing classroom and debating rules
  • Ensuring appropriate materials are made available (i.e. textbooks and learning aids)
  • Field Trip Management (i.e., planning, organizing, permission slip execution, etc.)
  • Participation in school events, both onsite and offsite, when required
  • Attending meetings, staff trainings, conferences, and other ongoing learning programs
  • Informing students of additional learning opportunities and setting them up for success
  • Demonstrate passion and commitment to your discipline
  • Identify and participate in professional development opportunities
  • Builds relationships with parents and/or guardians to ensure exceptional “customer service”, supplying them with pertinent information
  • Be familiar with, and support, school administration in the effective implementation of the school’s Emergency Response Plan

English Learning (EL) Director

POSITION SUMMARY:

Leads the district's English Learner (EL) program, overseeing the development and implementation of comprehensive instructional and support services for preK-12 students. This includes ensuring alignment with the district's instructional vision, directing interpretation and translation services, and fostering strong family and community engagement.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

● Master's degree in Education or a related field
● Five (5) or more years of related teaching and administrative experience including supervisory responsibilities.
● Valid State Board of Education license in EL/TESOL and/or Principal certificate/license.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

● Directs all programs related to the instruction of students identified as English Learners ensuring learning experiences consistent with the mission statement and instructional goals of the program and district.
● Supervises administrators within the English Learning division.
● Collaborates with the Executive Director of Teaching & Learning to ensure alignment of vision, resources, human capital.
● Coordinates the entry/exit process for English Learners and implements transition services.
● Supervises the implementation of existing, new, and revised curriculum, ensuring compliance with state and federal expectations.
● Recommends new approaches, programs and techniques as needed to ensure high student achievement for English Learners.
● Identifies necessary and appropriate resources and materials for classroom instruction and maintains a comprehensive inventory of all instructional materials used by the District.
● Maintains a system to monitor student progress and program effectiveness.
● Reviews, analyzes, and interprets district assessment results and works with administration and staff to develop recommendations for instructional improvement based on those results.
● Prepares an annual operating budget, with such supporting data as are necessary for the Executive Director of Teaching & Learning.
● Writes and manages federal and state grants related to Services for English Language Learners, including but not limited to Title III grant.
● Keeps abreast of local, state, and national developments to effect changes in operations, providing leadership in bringing effective, innovative programs into the school district.
● Works with the administrative team to plan and conduct professional development, building the capacity of EL and non-EL teachers and administrators to support the linguistic and academic content needs of English language learners.
● Monitors the certification of District EL staff to ensure that the district is compliant with State Board of Education requirements.
● Monitors district compliance with required academic standards and Federal and state requirements relating to the provision of educational services to EL students; initiates corrective action as necessary.
● Collaborates with the Executive Director of Student Services for the referral, identification and assessment of English Learners who may have disabilities.
● Prepares reports and serves as liaison to the Ohio Department of Education & Workforce (ODEW) around English Learner education.
● Coordinates the development and dissemination of reports and information relative to the program for staff, parents, administration, school committees, and the community at-large.
● Plans, develops, and coordinates parent and community outreach activities and programs.
● Develops business and community collaborations.
● Recommends and implements the district's policies and procedures around EL services.
● Maintains accurate, complete records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
● Ensures the safety of students.
● Establishes and maintains cooperative professional relationships.
● Remains free of any alcohol or nonprescription controlled substance and abuse of any prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout employment in the district.
● Exhibits professional behavior, emotional stability, and sound judgment.
● Serves as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, and intelligent human beings.
● Understands the legal responsibility to help instill in students the belief in, and practice of, ethical principles and democratic values.

• Manages the identification, assessment and placement of EL students.
• Works closely with the special education department to coordinate program and service delivery and ensure all students receive appropriate educational and support services.
• Provides assistance and guidance to staff who are engaged in instruction of EL students.
• Ensures departmental staff maintains required credentials and facilitates on-going development opportunities that align with district strategies and objectives.
• Assists school administrators in implementing EL plans.
• Plans, coordinates and conducts staff development activities ensuring that instructional needs of the building are addressed.
• Prepares completion of required documentation and reports.
• Works cooperatively with district administrators, staff, parents, community agencies and others on matters related to the district’s English Learner’s instructional programs/curriculum as well as particular concerns.
• Develops and maintains relationships with community agencies to coordinate development and delivery of services provided to EL students and their families.
• Promotes positive community relations by clearly communicating messages to parents and members of the community; responding to parental and community inquiries in a timely and courteous manner, and maintaining visibility with students, parents and the community.
• Resolves problems, situations or issues in a collaborative, tactful, courteous and respectful manner.
• Maintains knowledge of current state and Federal mandates related to instruction of EL students.
• Represents the EL Program at district committee meetings and events; performs related tasks. Ensures the safety of students.
