Ohio TESOL Response to SCOTUS DACA Decision
June 20, 2020
When the Trump administration decided that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program would be discontinued, it jeopardized the immigration status of young people all across the United States of America and created a climate of fear and uncertainty.
As educators and advocates for immigrant communities and English learners, Ohio TESOL applauds the recent decision of the Supreme Court of the United States to block the Trump Administration from ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. More than 800,000 Dreamers who came to the United States at a young age are protected by this ruling.
America’s diversity is one of our greatest strengths and we need to embrace and cherish the gifts each of these young people bring to our nation. To deport DACA recipients back to countries that many of them barely know, would be cruel and inhumane. It is far better to nurture their talents and skills allowing them to become valued citizens, who contribute and serve their home.
Ohio TESOL will continue to serve and advocate for immigrant communities in order to build a greater future for them and all of our society. We are proud of all of our students and thank them for all they do.
